Through children’s leadership training, community service and positive friends and role models, club members develop a positive self-identity and obtain values that enable them be great and do good. Under the enthusiastic guidance of our Club staff, our club members are becoming community leaders of the future.
Our 2013 Youth of the Year, Johana Lopez, is a perfect example of how the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix programs develop new leaders. “I just thought it was a place to volunteer and have fun,” Johana says of when she began coming to BGCMP. But since those days, Johana has become an inspiring leader in her Club and her community.
Last year she volunteered an incredible 660 hours, helping younger kids in her school, assisting Club leaders and translating for a food delivery service in her neighborhood. She finished high school with a 4.3 GPA and scholarships to numerous colleges. Now she understands the impact the Club can have.
“It doesn’t matter who they are and where they come from, everyone has an opportunity to be great.”
